LONGVIEW, Wash. - The Lower Columbia 10-year-old all-stars began their Cal Ripken League tournament season with six games over the weekend in Longview, Wash.
Lower Columbia advanced to Sunday's championship game, where Cowlitz won 3-2 in extra innings.
The Lower Columbia team advanced to the final game with a big 8-7 victory over No. 1 seed Western (Longview) Sunday afternoon.
Pitchers Max Johnson, Cody Strickland and Ian Erickson combined on the mound for Lower Columbia, with big defensive plays in the field from Dane Lund, Marcus Brown and Taylor Landwehr.
In the championship contest, Cowlitz scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning with a full count and the bases loaded.
The Lower Columbia team consists of 12 players selected from regional teams including Astoria, Knappa, Lewis & Clark, Warrenton, along with Long Beach and Naselle from Washington.
In addition to the above mentioned players, team members include Marc Gallegos, Justin Short, Trevor Couch, Matt Kinnunen, Troy Howard and Ricky Sarin.
Lower Columbia competes at a tournament in Sandy this weekend.
West wins one in 2A all-star seriesMcMINNVILLE - The East won two of three games from the West in the Class 2A baseball all-star series over the weekend at Linfield College.
Warrenton's Kyle Johnson and Adam Neahring, along with Dan Green and Cory Hyson from Knappa, played for the West squad, coached by the Warriors' Lennie Wolfe.
Johnson had a hit each day, while Neahring collected a hit in a Saturday game. Green and Hyson also had hits for the West.
The East opened the series with a pair of wins Saturday (16-0 and 10-6), before the West came back with a 10-1 victory Sunday.
In the Class 3A all-star series in Roseburg, the North won all three games with the South, 11-2, 4-3 and 8-3.
The North was represented by Cowapa League players Eliot Vinzant (Scappoose), Daren Ackerman (Banks) and Tyson Jarvi (Clatskanie), along with Rainier's Justin Coffman, Tyler Brown and Justin Parrish.
Coffman was selected as the outstanding player for the North squad, after coming up with an RBI single in the North's 4-3 win.
Softball rained outA scheduled summer league softball doubleheader between Knappa and Warrenton was rained out Monday, and has been rescheduled for Friday at Warrenton (5:30 p.m.).
Junior State baseball action today includes: Rainier at Astoria (6 p.m.), Knappa at Clatskanie, and Warrenton at Tillamook, all doubleheaders.
