An interview with Dave and Keli Colbert, owners of Above It All Kites, 312 Pacific Ave So., Long Beach, Wash., 98631.
Kids of all ages delight in the brightly colored kites that fill our skies during the summer. Dave Colbert and his wife Keli play an enthusiastic part in this delight. The Colberts do a lot for the community and for children.
The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The hours for Saturday and Sunday are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but closing usually extends beyond 6 p.m. For more information call (360) 642-3541.
What do you want people to know about your business?
Keli: "We won't sell non-quality stuff. Our business is growth oriented, but we will stay truly people centered."
Dave: "We service what we sell. Also, we want people to know they can bring their pets, as well as food and drink, in our store."
What are your plans for the future?
Keli: "We're looking to expand by opening another store."
Tell me about the volume your shop does.
Dave: "We go through thousands of kites. It's about a 50-50 split between kites and yard spinners and windsocks as far as what we sell."
Are you busiest during the summer months?
Dave: "People wise, yes, summer is our busiest time, but in the winter off time we do research to find unusual items for our store. Also, we use this time to check on possible locations for expansion. So actually we're busy year round."
What is the most difficult part of your business?
Dave: "Keeping up with the inventory and keeping the holes filled."
There's a real sense of playfulness in your store. Can you explain that?
Keli: "Dave hasn't forgotten how to be a kid himself."
Dave: "We want kids to come in and know it's okay to touch things. A wet rag wipes off fingerprints that kids might leave on display kites. We pride ourselves in taking care of our customers and putting smiles on their faces."
