A 45-year-old man has been arrested after trying to lure a 12-year-old girl into the bathroom at the Astoria Library.

Joseph Posada is charged with harassment, attempted kidnapping and disorderly conduct. The 12-year-old is safe, following the incident.

Posada had been using the computers Thursday afternoon, across from the girl. He made gestures toward her, and when she became uncomfortable and got up to walk away, he grabbed her by the wrist.

The girl was able to pull free and told the man to get away. She got the attention of the library staff and a friend. But he continued, gesturing for her to follow him into the restroom.

Witnesses confirmed the report.

Police say the girl acted just the way she should have to protect herself.

“When Posada made her uncomfortable at the computer she went to get help. When he grabbed her she made sure others knew what had happened,” Deputy Chief Brad Johnston said. “While this case is isolated, parents should talk to their children about safety issues. Children need to know that they can call to others for help and should ensure that others know when someone is making them uncomfortable.”
