Susan Lura Macdonald of Portland, Oregon creates vibrant paintings full of color and texture. For this new collection of work, Susan's first inspiration came from her daughters. To be more specific the circus of activity her daughters bring to their home through endless energy and crazy antics. "This never ending activity" the artist says "results in our home resembling a Mad Hatters Ball." That sparked her idea for CARNIVALE.
Building on this inspiration, the paintings began to evolve, reflecting activities often unnoticed in every day life. "All the joy, sadness, laughter and tears we as people experience as we move about this planet," says Susan. As she began created these new pieces, the work evolved and began to take on more and more symbolism. Birds, often a representation of freedom through flight, also symbolize worry and menace. Primitive animals represent our past while presenting our responsibility to our planet and all of its inhabitants. These symbolisms combined with her vibrant use of colors creating strong compositional elements evocative of the places we each visit on our individual journeys in life.
