Astoria police arrested a 62-year-old man Saturday night after responding to several reports at 10:25 p.m. of shots fired in the area of 17th Street and Irving Avenue.

APD Sgt. Brad Johnston said one caller specified the address as 1695 Irving Avenue and named a suspect they said had fired a rifle into the air. Police surrounded the residence and told the suspect, Jimy Owens White, 60, of that address, and a visitor, Eric Alan Beal, 62, of Seaside, to come outside.

Both were arrested initially on charges of disorderly conduct and reckless endangering.

Johnston said after interviewing witnesses it was revealed Beal shot the firearm. White was present at the time. Both men were lodged at Clatsop County Jail.

Officers served a search warrant on the residence and seized several firearms including an automatic submachine gun. They also seized a total of 21 shell casings. The case will be referred to the Clatsop County District Attorney's office for additional charges.

Because of overcrowding at the jail, Beal and White were both released Sunday morning.
