North Coast residents have a chance to meet new Portland State University President Wim Wiewel next week.

Astoria-area alumni and friends will be able to learn about his goals for the university at a reception Tuesday hosted by the PSU Alumni Association. Hors d'oeuvres catered by the Blue Scorcher will be served and there will be a performance by students from the award-winning PSU opera program.

The event will be held at the Liberty Theater's McTavish Room, 1203 Commercial St., Astoria, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP to Sara Haley by e-mail to or phone (503) 725-9833.

During his visit to Astoria, Wiewel will be shown Astoria's planning and development successes by City Manager Paul Benoit. The PSU president will also meet with three executives of the region's historic attractions: Fort Clatsop, the Columbia River Maritime Museum and the Clatsop County Historical Society.

He will begin his visit with lunch with Greg Hamann, president of Clatsop Community College. PSU has long shown interest in increasing its course offerings locally through CCC.
