Roy Richard Mannila, 98, of Seaside, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, in Astoria.

He was born June 21, 1910, in Seaside. He attended school in the Seaside School District through eighth grade.

On Sept. 1, 1937, he married Opal J. Mannila in Rainier. She preceded him in death in November 2002.

He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Mr. Mannila was a self-employed carpenter for the majority of his life, working on both commercial and residential projects. He retired in 1975. He lived in Clatsop County his whole life, in Seaside, Warrenton and Gearhart.

He was a charter member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Seaside.

Family members said he enjoyed digging clams on the local beaches. He also enjoyed photography, and had an extensive collection of pictures that he had taken of Clatsop County history. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard "Dick" and Anita Mannila and John Mannila; two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy Lemieux and Kathy and Stig Johansen; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Rudy Mannila, in 1983.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 320 First Ave. in Seaside. Interment will follow the funeral at Evergreen Cemetery on Beerman Creek Road in Seaside.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
