The Oregon Department of Transportation is not closing 1-5 Southbound through Portland this weekend. The agency planned to close the freeway between the Fremont and Marquam bridges. Dave Thompson with ODOT says the construction planned for that stretch of highway would be dangerous in wet weather.
Thompson explaied, "The polymer concrete we are using in that mile-long section is very sensitive to moisture. The rain has just gotten in the way. It jeopardizes the polymer's ability to bond by Monday morning when traffic would hit it again."
Thompson says that ODOT did not know if the weather would force the cancellation until this morning. The plan is to close that stretch of I-5 Southbound next weekend instead.
