Traffic accidentsAt 8:10 a.m. Thursday, several callers reported a two-vehicle head-on crash on U.S. Highway 101 near the Oregon Highway 104 junction, just south of Warrenton's city limits. According to Oregon State Police, Robert William Hackleman II, 19, of Seaside, was northbound in heavy rain, when his red 1998 Nissan Maxima apparently started to hydroplane, causing him to lose control and cross into the opposite lane. His car struck an oncoming tan 2000 Mercury Marquis, driven by Patricia Jean Eterno, 49, of Astoria nearly head-on, causing it to spin off the roadway. Both drivers were contacted by Medix Ambulance Service, but refused transport to the hospital. Personnel from the Warrenton police and fire departments and a Clatsop County Sheriff's deputy assisted OSP at the accident scene.
? At 4:28 p.m., Astoria police responded to a report of a three-vehicle accident at 44th Street and Lief Erikson Drive. The report is incomplete, but apparently a car traveling west on Lief Erikson that attempted to turn left into a driveway was rear-ended by a minivan, which was then struck by a pickup. Of the three drivers and two passengers involved, all from Astoria, three people complained of pain and at least one was taken to the hospital to be examined. No citations were issued and the case remains under investigation.
Property crime? At 4:59 p.m. Thursday, there was a report of a man throwing a rock through the front window of Interior Style, 109 Ninth St. Astoria police located the suspect, Paul Howard Evalt, 53, an Astoria transient, and charged him with first-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and theft. Evalt was lodged at the county jail.
Burglary? At 9:26 a.m. Thursday, an overnight burglary was reported at Pier 39. The suspect was caught on surveillance video and Astoria police are investigating.
