DUII arrests At 7:14 p.m. Friday, Astoria police stopped Dennis Jerry Farrin, 54, of Portland for driving under the influence of intoxicants in the 4500 block of Lief Erikson Drive. He was taken to Clatsop County Jail, where an Oregon State Police officer determined he was under the influence of drugs that depressed his central nervous system.
At 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Oregon State Police arrested Christopher Michael Van Riper, 27, of Milwaukie for DUII on U.S. Highway 26, three miles east of the Cannon Beach junction. He had stopped his pickup in the middle of the highway and was sitting inside, slumped over the steering wheel with the doors locked and the motor running, OSP reported. A passing motorist beat on the pickup's windows and yelled at Van Riper. He called 9-1-1 when he was unable to rouse him. A Seaside police officer responded and was able to get the doors open. Van Riper was taken by ambulance to Providence Seaside Hospital, where he was treated and given a field sobriety test. He was then taken to the Seaside Police Department, where OSP reported his blood alcohol was 0.19 percent. He was cited and released. His pickup was towed.
Disturbances At 1:06 p.m. Saturday, a citizen reported a panhandler near the courthouse tried to bite her. At 2:50 p.m. Astoria police got a second call that a woman was trying to bite people, this time near Ninth Street and Marine Drive. The area was checked, but police were unable to locate the woman.
At 3:43 p.m. Saturday, Astoria police responded to a domestic disturbance on Dresden Avenue, where a man said he was trying to get his son out of the house because he was under the influence of methamphetamine. Astoria police arrested the son, Nolan Russell Scire, 23, of Astoria, for menacing and harassment and took him to Clatsop County Jail.
At 5:39 a.m. Sunday, a man reported a woman had assaulted him at his home on Battle Creek Lane in rural Astoria. When a Clatsop County Sheriff's deputy responded, the man, William John Sheridan, 35, was arrested for fourth-degree domestic assault and lodged at Clatsop County Jail. He later posted bail and was released.
At 3:22 p.m. Sunday, Warrenton police arrested Michael Alan Engebretson, 40, of Hammond, for burglary, criminal trespass and harassment after his wife reported he had a loaded shotgun. He was lodged at Clatsop County Jail.
Slithery circumstances At 6:39 p.m. Saturday, a man was seen licking a snake at the Premarq Center in Warrenton and asking people if they wanted to pet it. Warrenton police located him in the lobby of the nearby Shilo Inn, whose staff told him to leave and not return. The man returned to the Shilo parking lot at 9:24 p.m. and was again contacted by police.
Thefts At 3 p.m. Saturday, Seaside police reported a car worth $500 was stolen from 1021 12B S. Downing St.
At 7:11 a.m. Sunday, Seaside police reported Java Reef at 2674 Highway 101 N. had been broken into, with a stereo and other items stolen and the register taken apart.
Car accident At 6:52 a.m. Sunday, Seaside police reported a two-car accident at Second Avenue and U.S. Highway 101 in Seaside where one vehicle had pulled onto the highway in the path of a southbound car. The driver of the first car, Samantha Lynn Long, was transported to Providence Seaside Hospital for minor head injuries. Long, 19, of 1215 Second Ave. in Seaside, said she did not see the other car.
