In conjunction with the city of Astoria's spring clean-up weekend, the Astoria Fire Department will allow open burning within the city limits from dawn Saturday through dusk Sunday.

Those burning must have a burning permit from the department. Residents can stop by the department, at 555 30th St., to pick up a free permit today through Sunday.

Burn piles may be no more than 4 feet tall, and must be 50 feet away from any combustible materials. A water source, such as a garden hose, must be available. Burning materials must be constantly attended.

The following items may not be burned:

• rubber products and tires;

• plastics;

• wet garbage;

• petroleum and petroleum-treated materials;

• asphalt or industrial waste;

• any material that creates dense smoke or noxious odors.

Fire officials may stop any open burn if smoke emissions are offensive to neighbors or cause a hazard.
