The Oregon Zoo says a baby elephant born last November has gained more than 700 pounds and passed the 1,000 mark this week.

Lily gains 2.5 pounds every day even though she "never stops moving," zoo officials said.

Zookeepers say she likes carrots and apples. Her love of fruit has given trainers the ability to work with her to teach her tricks like opening her mouth and lifting her feet that help them with her healthcare.

Earlier in the week, there was less positive news about one of the three lion cubs born recently at the zoo. The smallest cub was put in a veteterinarian's care because of persistant health issues.
