Astoria Public Works has announced striping for three-hour parking and additional handicap accessible parking stalls at the former Safeway parking lot is scheduled to begin Thursday. The designated stalls will be roped off after 5 p.m. today in preparation for this work. Portions of the parking lot will be unavailable Thursday during striping and reopened as soon as possible. The corresponding signage is expected to be installed next week.
The new 3-hour designation for a portion of the lot is something that Astoria Downtown Historic District Association championed last year in order to ensure that at least part of the parking lot turned over throughout the day, making spaces more available to downtown shoppers and customers. The rest of the lot remains unlimited and available for all-day parking.
The north half of the parking lots will be designated three-hour parking, with white paint in each stall. Parking signs will be installed at each parking lot entrance describing the three-hour restriction in designated stalls. Enforcement of this parking restriction will not occur until installation of both signage and striping is completed.
