WARRENTON - Federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms along with officers of the Warrenton Police Department seized several firearms and a pipe bomb from a home at 79 N.E. Skipanon Drive at around noon Thursday.
Authorities also arrested Carlton Winsor, 41, a convicted felon who illegally possessed the weapons, said Police Chief Robert Maxfield. He said it is believed that Winsor's wife may have been buying him the weapons. She could face federal charges.
While searching for the firearms, agents discovered the pipe bomb and called in the Oregon State Police bomb squad. Members of the squard cleared the area around the home and then shot the bomb with an easily breakable shotgun round to make the potentially explosive device inert.
"It was determined that the apparent pipe bomb was inert and not a hazard after it was destroyed," Maxfield said.
Weapons seized during the raid included 9 mm and .40 caliber handguns, a Mac 11 submachine gun, AK-47 assault rifle and other rifles.
The ATF had received information from the Warrenton Police Department about the possibility of unlawful possession of firearms. Maxfield said he'd like to thank the ATF and the OSP for their "quick and professional" response to the situation.
