SEASIDE - North Coast radio personnality and local community supporter and volunteer John Chapman is being treated for a serious illness.
The following update has been released by his employer, 94.9 FM, with the approval of John's family:
"A little over a week ago, Chapman contracted H1N1 virus (swine flu). It progressed to pneumonia and from there to a serious life-threatening situation.
Chapman was admitted to Providence in Seaside and then to their ICU. He was placed on a ventiator to help his breathing. A day after being placed in ICU, they decided to send him by ambulance to a hospital in the Portland area which as extensive facilities for dealing with this type of complication. He's in their ICU right now.
It has been touch and go, but as of right now, Chapman appears to be getting better in small incremential doses.
There are some rumers about his condition and we want you to know for example, he is not in a coma. He is in heavy sedation because of the effrcts of the ventilator but can be brought out of that at any time.
We appreciate the concerns expressed by those who know something about this situation but right now the best thing for you to do is maybe just put him in your prayers.
We'll let you know what's happening as soon as we know anything. John will beat this thing. It is our greatest hope to see him back in the studio soon to hear Cal tell him "Don't ever do that again"
