MARY JACKSON'S FIRST-GRADE CLASS AT ST. MARY, STAR OF THE SEA SCHOOL, pictured above, recently participated in Scholastic Book Clubs' CLASSROOMSCARE, READING IS GIVING program, a literacy campaign. Thousands of classrooms are participating to help put books in the hands of children who need them - simply by reading themselves. Scholastic Book Clubs will donate 250,000 new books to children of families living on military bases at the end of the program.

Classrooms keep track of books read on posters and online, and then tell Scholastic when they've finished. Any books kids read in the classroom, with their parents, or on their own count toward the goal. Star of the Sea's first-grade class read the 50 required books way before the May 14 deadline, earning a slot in the ClassroomsCare Hall of Fame.

"Those little readers are so cute," said Ms. Jackson. Agreed.
