The deadline is Aug. 27 to register to vote in the Sept. 17 election. Mailed registration cards postmarked by that date will be accepted.

The Oregon Legislature has referred two issues to voters in September.

Measure 19 would amend the state constitution to authorize using principal from the Education Stability Fund in specified circumstances, transfer $150 million to the State School and create a school capital matching subaccount in the stability fund.

Measure 20 would increase the cigarette tax by 60 cents per 20-cigarette pack and use the money for the Oregon Health Plan, tobacco use reduction programs, cities, counties and transportation for the elderly and disabled. The current tax is 68 cents per 20-cigarette pack.

Anyone who is a resident of Oregon, a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old by Election Day may register to vote.

If you have moved and are currently registered to vote in Oregon, you may update their registration until 8 p.m. on Election Day.

People must update your registration when they move or change their mailing address, change their name or want to change their party affiliation.

Ballots will be mailed to registered voters Aug. 30.
