CANNON BEACH - Cannon Beach police said Tuesday that remains of a missing 28-year-old Gresham man were discovered in a wooded area of North Cannon Beach.

Police said a local resident told police she had found a skull in a densely wooded area while on a walk Sunday afternoon. Identification also found in the area identified the man as John Ryan, of Gresham.

Clatsop County Medical Examiner JoAnn Stefanelli examined the remains and determined that the cause of death was suicide by a gunshot wound to the head.

Ryan was reported missing July 18, police said. His abandoned car was discovered in a parking lot on Second and Spruce streets in Cannon Beach, but he wasn't found during a search of the nearby sewage lagoons and wetland areas and the Cannon Beach Christian Conference Center.

A friend had told police at the time that Ryan was not suicidal but he had broken up with a girlfriend and the experience had been "devastating."
