The fourth annual Cannon Beach Preschool and Children’s Center 5K to 10K run, aka Rock the Beach fundraiser, has been postponed. Originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, the run will now be held Saturday, May 31.

“We didn’t have enough preregistrations to warrant the run,” said Barbara Knop, an organizer for the event.

The run would have been held if 50 runners and walkers had shown up, though they had hoped for 100, she said. Only 15 participants had preregistered, however.

Knop suspects that the 7 a.m. start time had something to do with the modest turnout. Because lower tides will occur at a more favorable time in May, starting the run so early in the morning won’t be as much of a deterrent.

“We won’t have to worry about (the tides) in May,” she said.

Rock the Beach benefits the Cannon Beach Preschool and Children’s Center, a nonprofit organization serving North Coast families. The Center nearly had to close last year, but “it’s financially sound right now,” Knop said, adding that the fundraiser is still helpful for keeping the doors open.

Now “people have more time to get in shape,” she said.
