NEWPORT - Three men are safe after paddling to shore in a dinghy when their sailboat ran aground north of Newport's north jetty early Wednesday. Skipper Peter Siegel, 47, of Cannon Beach, issued a mayday call to the U.S. Coast Guard after the sailing vessel Evening Star ran aground, according to Oregon State Police. At about 3 a.m., Siegel and his crew, Astoria resident Bob Berry, 53, and Michael Metzner, 45, of Portland, set anchor about 30 yards offshore, climbed into a dinghy and paddled to the beach.

The three reportedly sailed from Ilwaco, Wash., at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Police said Siegel planned to refloat the vessel at high tide.
