The Astoria School Board approved a 2007-08 school calendar with Thursday classes releasing one hour early.
At a regular meeting Thursday evening, board members unanimously approved the weekly early releases to allow more time for teachers to train and use Response to Intervention, a multistep approach to providing struggling students with services and supplemental instruction.
The school board also agreed Thursday to fund high school golf, which was cut from the budget several years ago and has since been financed mostly through donations.
Chairwoman Laurie Choate and directors Bob Johnson and David Kaspar voted in support of reinstating funding for golf, while board members Brad Pope and Laura Snyder were opposed.
Superintendent Mike Sowder said the program costs about $10,000 to $15,000 each year and the high school will continue to work with the separate golf foundation to finance the sport.
