SEASIDE - The 12 years of efforts by various groups in Seaside are being recognized by the Oregon Recreation and Parks Association.

The Seaside Skate 'N Ride Park is being awarded the 2007 Design of the Year. The award will be presented Tuesday at the annual state conference in Eugene. The park opened for use in June.

"All the things came together and it has really become a focal point in the community," said Mary Blake, Director of Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District. "This was a big project for a small community."

The award will be received by a group of people representing all the factions who pushed to make the park become a reality - including Angela Fairless, a volunteer who worked on the project; a representative from the City of Seaside; and Blake, who will represent SEPRD.

"I'm really excited about it," said Blake. "I get a little choked up every time I talk about it."

Stefan Hauser of Place to Ride Inc., an Astoria resident, designed the park. He has moved on to a project in Cannon Beach, designing and building their new park with construction slated to begin this month.

Blake is planning to submit the Seaside skate park design to the Special Districts of Oregon group as well.

It will give out its awards for park submissions in February.
