MANZANITA - St. Catherine of Alexandria Episcopal Church will host its annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Pine Grove Community House on Laneda Avenue in Manzanita. Costumes are encouraged.

This year, this traditional pre-Lenten meal will be free of charge. A free-will offering will be taken at the door. Proceeds will be dedicated to the church's outreach programs to alleviate hunger in local communities, including the North County Food Bank and the Grub Club summer lunch program for children.

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday") in French, is the last day before Lent on the Christian calendar. Traditionally, rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, meat and sugar were used up on Tuesday night before beginning the Lenten fast on Ash Wednesday.
