CANNON BEACH - Stephanie Inn Dining Room is one of two winners selected by the Oregon Restaurant Association in its sixth annual Restaurant Neighbor Award program.

The program was established by the National Restaurant Association to honor and recognize restaurant owners who go above and beyond in supporting their communities

Shephanie's, and Crossings at the Riverhouse in Bend, will compete with other state winners for the National Restaurant Neighbor Award.

The Stephanie Inn Dining Room participates in several charitable activities, including Share Our Strength fund-raiser for Oregon's hungry, Chef's Night Out for the Cannon Beach Children's Resource Center, the Cystic Fibrosis foundation, Cooking for Kids, and Loaves and Fishes/Meals on Wheels.

"Involvement in these events truly makes a difference in people's lives," said John Newman, executive chef at the Stephanie Inn. "Because of this, I find it easy to have a high level of energy, enthusiasm and motivation when I wake up every day."

A profile of the community-service efforts of each national and state winner will be highlighted in a booklet, as well as on the Association's Web site, (

The state restaurant association is also urging restaurateurs and patrons to submit nominations for its own annual awards. Deadline is Aug. 13.

"The restaurant industry is the cornerstone of Oregon's economy, community and careers," said Chief Executive Officer Michael McCallum. "The awards of distinction highlight the tremendous contributions restaurants and their employees make to communities across the state, and shines the spotlight on leaders who are making a difference for the industry."

Every year, the association presents Restaurateur of the Year, Purveyor of the Year, and Community Service awards. Additional awards are presented dependent upon nominations, including: Hall of Fame, Industry Achievement, and Employee of the Year.

In 2003, the association honored four individuals for their accomplishments and commitment to their industry at the annual awards banquet in Seaside.

The association will honor this year's winners at a banquet, sponsored by Liberty Northwest Insurance Sept. 20 at Sunriver.
