The first annual BreakAway Boys Basketball Camp is scheduled for June 24-27 at Astoria Middle School.

Because of retirements, the Riverside Boys Basketball Camp will no longer be offered, with the BreakAway Camp filling the void.

The camp will be for boys entering grades four through nine next fall.

New Astoria boys varsity coach Chris Hunt, along with assistants Gordon Thomson and Jeff Leo, will be in charge of the camp, which will run from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Several local high school players will serve as camp counselors and referees.

The purpose of the camp is to develop a young player's individual and team skills. Players will learn skills associated with passing, shooting, rebounding, defense and more. Contests and drills will be used to teach and reinforce the skills needed to become a better player.

Cost of the camp is $55 for each player. Registration and information brochures are available at Astoria area schools and Link's Outdoor store 1254 Commercial St.

For information, contact Hunt at 338-6088 or Thomson at 325-5061.

Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt, a certificate of participation, special achievement awards and a camp picture.
