TILLAMOOK - A Salem teen-ager died Monday after a sand tunnel he was digging near Pacific City collapsed, according to the Tillamook County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies are investigating the incident, which was reported at 4:28 p.m. in Bob Straub State Park, Sheriff Todd Anderson said today.

Salem residents Alexander Fredrickson, 15, and Chad Bowen, 23, were digging a sand tunnel near the dune area, Anderson said. Both were underground in the tunnel near the dunes when it collapsed, he said.

Nestucca Valley firefighters were able to locate and rescue Bowen, who was treated and later released from North Lincoln Hospital. Fredrickson was located but pronounced dead at the scene.

The families of both Fredrickson and Bowen were present when the accident occurred, Anderson said.
