SEASIDE - School board elections loom for Seaside School District.

The lone contested race is for Zone 4, Position 2, and has incumbent Mark Truax against challenger Thad Nolan.

Truax, a two-term board member, is hoping to address a few issues that he believes are key if re-elected.

"We need to address the Cannon Beach schools situation and get it solved," said Truax. The question of the Cannon Beach schools being in the tsunami zone has been looming over the district for some time and, as yet, no solution has been found.

Truax also hopes to keep Seaside schools heading in the right direction.

"Seaside is meeting all the benchmarks for No Child Left Behind," said Truax.

Nolan disagrees with Truax's stance on No Child Left Behind and thinks there is a need for improvement in many areas of the district.

"I think No Child Left Behind is a farce," said Nolan. "It's not really testing what students know."

According to Nolan, the nature of the test is to measure whether students are learning.

He says that if students are spending their time in class preparing for the exam, they are not really taking the tests appropriately.

Nolan would also like to see the institution of more hands-on based teaching techniques in Seaside.

"A lot of the learning is computer-generated, based right now," said Nolan.

He also hopes to see the beginning of an accountability system for students and teachers alike.

"From what I've seen, the high school is out of control," said Nolan.

In other races incumbent Nancy Hauger is running uncontested for Zone 1, Position 1 and incumbent Steven Phillips is running uncontested for Zone 5, Position 1.

David Robinson is also running uncontested to renew his two-year unexpired term for Zone 2, Position 2. He was appointed to the position in November 2005.

"I like to cheer on teachers and administrators," said Robinson. "I am also a big supporter of the literacy push in the district to bring up the reading levels of all students."
