GEARHART - A thief decided to drop into the Cougar Ridge Knife Co. - literally.
A hole in the ceiling - large enough for a small body to crawl through - and a footprint on a display case aren't the only evidence that someone was there uninvited. The thief also left a cell phone.
The attempted burglary at the store, 3348 U.S. Highway 101 N., occurred early Friday morning, possibly around 1 a.m., said store owner Randy Tagg.
Tagg believes the thief may have been a customer in the store earlier and noticed the bars on the windows and the security system in place. So, to remain undetected, dropping through the roof may have appeared to be the best choice.
"But the thief didn't realize we have a motion sensor, and it went off," Tagg said. "On the way out, he dropped his cell phone, and he left other stuff on the roof. That alarm is so stinkin' loud."
The thief got as far as putting one foot on a display case.
Gearhart police are investigating the burglary. Nothing appeared to be taken, and no damage estimate was available.
However, Tagg said, a lot of water from severe rains entered through the hole in the roof and "soaked a lot of stuff." He is talking to his insurance company, he said.
This is the first burglary attempt since the store opened a year ago, Tagg said.
