One vote lead will force county to recount ballots MondayGEARHART - In the closest city council race on the North Coast, incumbent Ed Tice has retained his seat in Gearhart.

At least until the recount Monday.

Clatsop County Elections staff finalized results today with Tice at 303 votes and his challenger, Carol Brenneman, at 302 votes. Because of this outcome, the county will have a required recount at 9 a.m. Monday. A race needs to be within two votes for an automatic recount, election officials have said.

"I wouldn't have exchanged this experience for anything," Brenneman said. "It's been interesting getting to know Gearhart people and issues."

The vote totals showed Brenneman slightly ahead for a time on election night, although Tice caught up and overtook her later as votes dropped off at other county courthouses were forwarded to Astoria and added to his tally. This is allowed under Oregon election law: Voters can drop off their ballots in any county as long as they meet the deadline.

In the other council race, another Gearhart incumbent, John Pincetich, handily defeated challenger Preston Deveraux. Mayor Kent Smith was elected unopposed for his fourth term.
