SEASIDE — The Seaside Heights Elementary School Backpack Program is gearing up for the 2011-12 school year. The committee reported that the pilot program during the spring semester was a success. Community members were generous with donations and volunteer help, and a $5,000 donation was given by the employees of Safeway.

More than 40 children were assisted during the pilot program. It is expected that 100 children will require assistance in the coming year. A weekend backpack of food costs approximately $7 per child. To support one child for the entire school year costs approximately $273. Community members are asked to consider making a donation of $273 today.

The wish list for continued success is donations of cash, backpacks in good repair, food items and volunteers. Donations of any type may be dropped off at the Seaside Elks Lodge 324 Avenue A, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church 320 First St., and the Seaside American Legion 1315 Broadway.

Mail donations to: Seaside Heights Elementary Backpack Program, in care of Al Peinhardt, P.O. Box 2871, Gearhart, OR 97138.
