A new eight-week training program for Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), covering search and rescue, disaster and medical operations, disaster preparedness, fire suppression, terrorism and disaster organization will be held at the Astoria Fire Department beginning in March.

The class is for people of all ages.

There will be an information meeting for people interested in the training at 6:30 p.m. March 4.

Astoria CERT Coordinator Bill Davidson said the program would offer people a better understanding of how to protect themselves, their families and their neighbors in case of an emergency.

People will learn how to turn off gas meters and how to fight small fires - but only to the extent the fires can be fought using a fire extinguisher.

For more information, contact Bill or Dorothy Davidson at (503) 325-2345 ext. 7.
