A man reported seeing a bright light hovering over Youngs Bay Monday night and asked the U.S. Coast Guard to investigate.

"What we think he's been seeing is a planet," said Chief Steve McAloney, group duty officer at Air Station Astoria. "It's been hanging out above Youngs Bay - at least on my watch."

McAloney said Venus has been shining brightly near the moon.

Although the man called to report the unidentified flying object several times, he never left his name or phone number. The Coast Guard can only trace some calls, and people must stay on the phone for a while, McAloney said.

The man stayed on the telephone line only long enough to say the light looked like a UFO.
