Students in the Upward Bound Summer Academy at Clatsop Community College will present their projects at 6:30 p.m.Thursday in the auditorium of the CCC Performing Arts Center (PAC), located at 588 16th St. in Astoria. This event, free to the public, enables the students to make formal presentations on what they accomplished in each of five projects completed during the Academy.

Upward Bound is a federally funded educational outreach program that motivates and supports high school students in preparing for college. In academic year 2012-13, the Upward Bound program served 72 area high school students from Astoria, Seaside and Warrenton. The five projects completed by the students this year included:

• growing food in a local community garden;

• creating and publishing a guide book to the area;

• redeveloping habitat for the Oregon Silverspot Butterfly;

• creating different pieces of art from local materials; and

• observing and writing about local birds, trees and plant species.

Students in the Academy also attended morning core classes that included math, science, foreign language and writing. For more information about Upward Bound at Clatsop Community College, please contact Robert McClelland, 503-325-2898 or rmcclelland@clatsopcc.edu
