CANNON BEACH - Darryl Walker is the Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue Firefighter of the Year, as was announced Wednesday. Walker has been a volunteer since May 2002, and is certified as a firefighter 2, EMS First Responder, vehicle and machinery rescue technician fire apparatus driver and water rescue technician. He is active with the surf rescue team, as well as his day job with the Public Works Department.

"He is perpetually cheerful, no matter what," said Cannon Beach Fire Chief Cleve Rooper. "He always pitches in and does what's needed without being asked ... We are delighted to have him."

Runners up were Mike Johnson, Jamie Hurrell and T.J. White. Nominations were made by officers and voted on by the entire department.

The department also thanked Jim Osburn for 30 years of service, Dave Rouse and Joanne Cremer for 20, Rob Schulz for 10 and Rafael Arcadio, Marty Giguiere and Mark Morgans for five.
