OLYMPIA, Wash. - Because of chronic wasting disease, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is banning the importation of deer and elk carcasses.

It is now illegal to import deer or elk carcasses or body parts into Washington if the animals were harvested in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Illinois, South Dakota, Nebraska or Saskatchewan except for meat that has been de-boned in the state or province where it was harvested; skulls, antlers and teeth from which all soft tissue has been removed; hides or capes without heads attached, and finished taxidermy mounts.

The action is effective Sept. 1.
