Oregon authorities received notice Monday that a nursery operation in Washington County is closing, eliminating 100 jobs.

Texas-based Berry Family Nurseries submitted a required layoff notice to the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development.

Rob Drake is the city manager in Cornelius - the nearest city to the facility. He says farms and agriculture businesses surround Cornelius.

"Because of that, we think of the farms near the city and around the city as family," Drake says. "We feel for the individuals who have been let go, and we hope they can get back on their feet real soon."

The state filing lists 69 of the 100 lost jobs as "general labor." The rest are mainly supervisors, managers and clerk positions.

The plant is scheduled to close by Sept. 30.

A previous version of this story mischaracterized the type of plant involved in the layoff.
