Darol Funk, owner of Western Oregon Waste, and a specialist in recycling education, has developed a relationship with students at Hilda Lahti Elementary School in Knappa. He visits the school yearly, presenting valuable information about changes in the recycling field and encouragement that has helped the small rural school receive endorsement as an official Green School.

WOW has recently awarded the school with a composter, which will be maintained by the school's Green Team, with the anticipated outcome of less waste going to the landfill. WOW also sponsored a team of students and a teacher to attend the annual Oregon Green Schools Summit March 5 in Portland.
