Wednesday visit to celebrateU.S. Rep. David Wu has secured $1.2 million to complete the Port of Astoria's rehabilitation of the East Mooring Basin.

The provision is included the Fiscal Year 2005 Energy and Water appropriations bill, which passed the House of Representatives last week.

"The rehabilitation of the East Mooring Basin is vital for Astoria to maintain its important commercial fishing industry," said Wu, D-Ore.

"This rehabilitation is also important to the small port dependent businesses, to provide them with a safe and secure area to operate their businesses."

Wu has previously secured $15 million for the project. The East Mooring Basin provides moorage for a large portion of commercial fishing vessels homeported on the lower Columbia River. Built in 1950, the breakwater has shown significant deterioration in many areas. Repair and reconstruction efforts began in 1998 and, with the final installment of necessary funds, should be completed by early 2006.

Wu will be in Astoria Wednesday and will join Port of Astoria officials and commissioners to celebrate the project.
