Zona Faye Malinen, 80, of Astoria, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005 in Hammond.

Mrs. Malinen was born May 24, 1925, to August D. and Anna Saukko Lambert in Vancouver, Wash.

Mrs. Malinen attended Orchards Elementary School in Vancouver and graduated from Vancouver High School in 1943. She then moved to Astoria to attend nursing school at St. Mary's Hospital in Astoria.

She married Earl Arvi Malinen May 24, 1946, in Astoria. He died in March of 2005.

After their marriage, she became a homemaker and began raising her family. She then worked at Montgomery Wards in Astoria until 1981. After her husband's retirement in 1983, they became snow birds and spent winters in Arizona.

Mrs. Malinen's hobbies included gardening, camping, traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Judie Malinen of Warrenton, and Timothy and Sue Malinen of Astoria; four grandsons, Andrew Malinen of Warrenton, Tony Malinen of Salem, Nathan Malinen and Caleb Malinen, both of Astoria; two granddaughters, Juli Hol and Sarah Malinen, both of Astoria; and a niece, Sandra Martin of Astoria.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Carmel Ranta in May of 2003.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave.

A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, at Lewis & Clark Bible Church, 35082 Seppa Lane in Astoria.

Private vault interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
