Sept. 24, 1927 — Jan. 19, 2015
Gloria Anne Kelly was born Sept. 24, 1927, in New York City, to Joseph and Martha Lauria. She grew up and received her education in New York City. She met Richard “Dick” Kelly while he was stationed in the Navy on the USS Brooks in New York during World War II. After the war they eloped and moved to Astoria, Ore., where they resided for the rest of their 68 years of marriage. She passed on into glory on Jan. 19, 2015. Richard passed away in February 2014. Her parents and her siblings preceded Gloria in death: Joseph, James, Thomas and Angelina Julie of New York.
Gloria was a homemaker, but worked in area canneries during the summer months. She was a shop steward at Union Fish. She helped run the snack shack at Tapiola Park while her sons played Babe Ruth baseball. She was an involved mother of the original Scandinavian Dancers, chaperoning many trips the group made. She was a charter member/volunteer of the First Scandinavian Festival, a tradition that continues in Astoria to this day.
She was a dedicated mother of five children, who survive her: Richard (Sonny and Jan) Kelly, Thomas (Lily) Kelly, Donald Kelly, Kathy (Rick) Zimmerman and Julie (Terry) Johnson. She had multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. She was loved by all who knew her, and will be greatly missed.
There will be a private interment at Greenwood Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and close friends. Donations can be made through Ocean View Burial & Cremation Services at 1213 Franklin Ave. in Astoria for St Jude Children’s Hospital, a charity that Gloria supported for many years.
