Jan. 6, 1915 — July 31, 2016
Marie Petrina (Gjovik) Henderson passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at her care home in Happy Valley, Oregon.
Born Jan. 6, 1915, in Astoria, Oregon, Marie was the last remaining member of her siblings. Marie was born to Norwegian emigrants Peter and Margrethe Gjovik, who came to America to begin a new life and raise a family. She had four brothers, Henry, Olaf, Harold and Walter, who all lived their lives in Astoria.
Marie graduated from Astoria High School Class of 1932, and in 1946 moved to Portland, Oregon. She married James Thayne Henderson of Portland in 1953, and together built their new home in northeast Portland in 1955. There they had their only child, Jim Henderson, in 1956.
Marie was the office manager for Spear Beverage Co. for many years, and later worked for a petroleum distributor until her retirement in 1980 at 65. She was called back to work on a part-time basis, and continued for an unspecified length of time. After her husband’s death in 1985, she became very involved with the Gateway Elks widows group and taking care of and nurturing her granddaughters whenever she could.
Marie leaves behind her son Jim, daughter-in-law Sandra Henderson, and loving pet companion Marla, all of Clackamas; granddaughters Ashley Henderson of California and Amanda Henderson of Texas; nieces Carole (Gjovik) Lyngstad of Astoria, Kat Gjovik of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Peggy (Gjovik) Lyle of Washington, Kenneth Gjovik of Beaverton and John Gjovik of South Bend; and friends who had the pleasure to know her.
She was a very special lady, and anyone who met her — even in her final months — was impressed by her humor, inquisitive mind, physical strength and mobility. She is missed so very dearly.
Marie’s funeral took place on Aug. 4, 2016, at the Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes, and she was laid to rest next to her husband in Willamette National Cemetery. A celebration of life took place at her son’s home in Clackamas that afternoon.
