Anna Louise 'Granny' Basel
Cafe owner, 82Anna Louise "Granny" Basel, 82, of Astoria, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Basel was born to Oscar L. and Cora E. Kline Wahlstrom May 12, 1922 in Astoria. She was raised in Astoria, graduating from Astoria High School in 1940.
She married Harley Basel Aug. 29, 1941 in Astoria. He preceded her in death.
Living in the Youngs Bay area since 1943, Mrs. Basel raised her three children and grandson, Troy Basel. With her husband, she owned and operated Arlee's Cafe. She enjoyed gardening and needlework. With her children, she was active in 4-H, as well as school and scouting events. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the Order of Vasa.
She spent the last 12 years with her companion, Leland Westley.
Mrs. Basel is survived by a daughter, Harlene Lloyd of Banks; a son, Robert Basel of Portland; five grandchildren, Troy Basel of Astoria, Tara Redmond of Banks, Tracy Ellerbroek of Banks and Leben and Kiel Basel of Portland; and four great-grandchildren, Kristine, Derik and Karley Basel of Astoria and Karrisa Alexis Redmond of Banks. A son, Ray Basel, was lost at sea in 1985.
Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in Astoria. Interment will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
