Bernard T. "Ben" Salmon, 87, of Clatskanie, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, in Longview, Wash.
He was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Woodson, to Charles H. and Kate H. (Kinnunen) Salmon.
Raised in Woodson on the family farm, he attended school in Westport. He then attended trade school to learn to work with sheet metal. He worked for a period of time in California for Lockheed Aircraft Company.
In 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy, and served until 1945. He completed the prescribed course of study at the Aviation Metalsmith School in Norman, Okla. In 1943, he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Attu.
In 1945, Mr. Salmon returned to Woodson and purchased the family farm. Besides working on the farm, he worked in the sawmill. He retired in 1959.
Family members said he completed a course in acetylene and arc welding at Clatsop Community College in 1967. He loved to fish, especially on Jones Beach.
He is survived by a brother, Willard E. Salmon of Portland; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Bernice M. Fox of Carson City, Nev., Katherine and Frank Wright of Lockeford, Calif., and Eileen Leback of Astoria; a special friend, Suzie Timonen of Clatskanie; 19 nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond C. and Richard W. Salmon; and two sisters, Lucille Larson and Nancy Pedersen.
Mr. Salmon requested that there be no service.
