Bessie E. Curtis

Knappa native, 91Bessie E. Curtis, 91, of Astoria, died Friday, July 5, 2002, in Astoria.

Mrs. Curtis was born in Knappa on the family homestead November 5, 1910, to Jens Hanson and Martha Vee. She graduated from Knappa High School.

On June 10, 1932, she married Glen Curtis in Astoria. He died in 1967.

Following graduation from high school, she was a nanny in Portland for a few years before moving back to this area. She became a beautician and member of the Young Women's Business Club in Astoria. She was then a stay-at-home mom for 30 years before becoming a cook at Hilda Lahti Elementary School and the senior center in Svensen in 1968. She retired at the age of 80. Family members say she enjoyed knitting and cooking chicken dinners for family and friends.

Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Don Ivanoff of Astoria, and Gayle and Ray Derrah of Hillsboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Ida Fay Curtis of Walterville, and Mike and Jill Curtis of Gearhart; three sisters, Mary Lyon and Lillian La Beck of Svensen, and Elsie Pedersen of Cathlamet, Wash.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Audrey Hanson of Cathlamet, and Arthur and Kay Hanson of Hawaii; four granddaughters and three husbands, Marie and John Randall of San Ramon, Calif., Susan and Mike Schaffrinna of Dayton, Ohio, Lisa and Rob Silbernagle of Monroe, and Jamie Curtis of Seaside; four grandsons and two wives, Dennis Derrah of Portland, Dean and Kathy Derrah of Beaverton, Ted and Heidi Curtis of Dallas, and Eric Curtis of Gearhart; and 13 great-granchildren. In addition to her husband, two sisters, Gudrun Pasma and Louise Hanson, died earlier.

Visitation is today from noon to 7 p.m. at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary. Public memorial service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Knappa. Private interment is at Ocean View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 42417 Valley Creek Lane, Astoria, OR 97103.
