Edmund Meling, 87, of Seaside, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, in Seaside.

He was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Williston, N.D., to Eilert and Agnes (Daae) Meling.

In 1937, he moved to Albany.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, and was a captain's radioman on the USS California. He served until December 1945.

On June 1, 1946, he married Roberta Vanderlaan of Portland, who survives.

Mr. Meling worked for banks for 35 years, the last being Wells Fargo. He managed branches in Yamhill, Carlton, Lincoln City, and Seaside. He retired in 1983, and continued living in Seaside.

He was a member of the Seaside Elks, American Legion, Kiwanis, Masons and the Seaside United Methodist Church.

Family members said his hobbies were golfing and bowling.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Myrna Meling of Springfield, Va., and Paul and Laura Meling of Lincoln City; five grandchildren, Stefanie Meling of Florida, Amanda Meling of Richmond, Va., Dawn Wilen and her husband, Nick, of Lincoln City, Jeff Meling of Salem and Mark Meling of Dallas, Ore.; two great-grandchildren, Tytus and Tegan Meling of Lincoln City; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Vanderlaan of Portland; and many nephews, nieces and their families.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Seaside United Methodist Church.

Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
