Evelyn M. Engelson, 92, a lifelong resident of Naselle, Wash., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, in a Cathlamet, Wash., nursing home.
She was born May 25, 1916, in Naselle, to Toivo and Hilma (Sundberg) Penttila. She graduated from Naselle High School in 1933.
She married Art Engelson in Naselle. He preceded her in death Nov. 15,1954.
Mrs. Engelson worked for Wahkiakum West as a secretary for many years, retiring in 1991.
She was a member of Naselle Lutheran Church.
Family members said she enjoyed oil painting and photography. She made photo albums and slide shows and embroidered. She loved being a hostess and making pastries and coffee. She took great pride in her Finnish heritage.
She is survived by two sons, Edwin and Robert Engelson, both of Naselle; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Hilma "Bunny" Latham, April 2, 2000; a brother, Hans Penttila; two brothers-in-laws and their wives, Elmer and Lois Engelson and Harold and Ida (Engelson) Martin; four sisters, Hady Penttila, Hulda Bighill, Helen Oatfield and Milja Rasmussen; three nephews, Van Engelson, David Oatfield and Ronald "Skeeter" Bighill; and a grandson, Kerry Latham.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Dowling Funeral Home in Cathlamet.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Peaceful Hill Cemetery in Naselle. A memorial service follows at noon at Naselle Lutheran Church.
