John W. Ford
Longshoreman, 60John W. Ford, 60, of Astoria, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 in Astoria.
Mr. Ford was born June 24, 1943 in Astoria to William N. and Jacqueline Erp Ford. He grew up in the Fernhill and John Day areas and graduated from Knappa High School in 1961. He attended George Fox College in McMinnville.
On Aug. 1, 1964 he married Sandra Lind in Portland. She survives, living in Astoria.
He started working at local fish canneries and then began his career longshoring in 1965, retiring in 1993.
Mr. Ford enjoyed sharing walks in the woods with his children and grandchildren and loved working his logging equipment, especially his Mack truck. In recent years, his passion was driving a shuttle bus to Mt. Ashland for Bear Creek Bicycle Co. and socializing with cyclists from around the world.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Ford is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Brian Crouter of Astoria; a son, John Jerome Ford of Ashland; two grandchildren, Ryan and Kelsea Crouter of Astoria; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Josephine and Capt. Robert Livingston of Ocean Park, Wash., Cheryl and Donald Shrode of Knappa and Jacqueline G. Ford of Astoria; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Linda Ford of Astoria; his mother, Jacqueline Ford of Astoria; his mother-in-law, Esther Lind of Astoria; and his aunt, Mary Aceti of Detroit, Mich. His father died in January 2003.
Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 9:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria.
A funeral is 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Seventh and Commercial streets.
