Gladys J. Anderson Cummings, 86, of Astoria, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, in Astoria.
She was born Jan. 7, 1923, in Astoria, to Oscar and Freda Anderson.
In January 1941, she graduated from Astoria High School. She sang in the special chorus in high school and participated in church choirs. In high school, she belonged to the Community Concert Association and attended all of their programs.
In September 1941, she began nurses' training at St. Mary's Hospital.
On June 22, 1946, she married Oliver Cummings. He preceded her in death Oct. 5, 1990.
Mrs. Cummings was employed as an office nurse by a doctor in Astoria until 1948. She then became a homemaker.
In her youth, she was a member of the Girls Athletic Association, the Girls Reserves, the YWCA and the Presbyterian Youth Group. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters for more than 50 years.
Family members said she loved singing, playing the piano and reading.
She is survived by a son, Robert W. Cummings of Astoria; a lifelong friend, Helen King of Astoria; a sister-in-law and her husband in Beaverton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
At Mrs. Cummings' request, there will be no formal service. Private interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria.
