Helen G. Shaffer, 81, of Seaside, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2009, in Seaside.
She was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Trinidad, Colo., to James P. and Hazel (Tennant) Courtney. She was raised in Trinidad, where she graduated from high school.
She married Ralph S. Overbay. They later divorced.
In 1969, she relocated to Oregon.
On May 24, 1970, she married Donald H. Shaffer at Astoria Baptist Church. He preceded her in death in 1992.
She is survived by four sons and a daughter-in-law, Stanford L. Overbay and Edward C. and Jeannine Overbay, all of Astoria, Daniel R. Overbay of Springfield and Timothy S. Shaffer of Seaside; a daughter, Kathy R. Shaffer Riggs and her husband, Daniel, of Astoria; two stepsons, Ben Shaffer of Astoria and Sid Shaffer of Warrenton; nine grandchildren, Isaiah Scott Shaffer of Denver, Nathan Daniel Shaffer of Seaside, Chris J. and Erin James Riggs, Kyle Daniel Overbay and Carmen Shaffer, all of Astoria, Dawn Marie Overbay of Reno, Nev., LaReina Kyle and her husband, Mike, of Tigard, and Jeanne Strage; and seven great-grandchildren.
A public visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria. At Mrs. Shaffer's request, no formal service will be held.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation or a charity of one's choice, in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
