Hazel E. Hoagland

Teacher, 91Hazel E. Hoagland, 91, of Mount Vernon, Wash., formerly of Astoria, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005.

Mrs. Hoagland was born March 28, 1913, in Bock, Minn., to Carl and Sigrid Eckdall. While living with her parents, she taught school in a one-room schoolhouse and eventually moved to the Northwest, where she taught in Oregon and Washington. She eventually settled in Burlingame, Wash.

In 1955, she married Carl Harold Bernett Carlson. He preceded her in death in 1961. After his death, Mrs. Hoagland continued to teach and travel.

In 1971, she married Frank Hoagland of Astoria. The couple traveled throughout the Southwest and Mexico. They spent summers in Shelter Bay, Wash., and winters in Mesa, Ariz. Mr. Hoagland preceded her in death in 1998.

After his death, Mrs. Hoagland became a resident of Mountain Glen Retirement Center in Mt. Vernon, Wash.

Family members said Mrs. Hoagland enjoyed teaching, traveling, sports and had faith in her Lord. She was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church in Bock and the Bethany Covenant Church in Mt. Vernon.

Mrs. Hoagland is survived by one son, John G. Meyer of University Place, Wash.; one granddaughter, Brandy M. Meyer of Bellevue, Wash; one niece, Marie Moon of Minneapolis; one nephew, Paul Larson of Prior Lake, Minn.; and many other relatives in Minnesota and Sweden.

A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Hawthorne Funeral Home and Memorial in Mt. Vernon. Interment will follow.
